Creative Therapies
ANZACATA-registered Art Therapist, I am in my second year of a Masters in Therapeutic Arts.
I’ve been working as a clinical Art therapist for three years at a mental health hospital, across multiple wards in Orange, NSW. Art Therapy offers a safe, creative space for children, tweens, teens, adults and families.
Creative Arts Therapists are mental health professionals who use art, media and the creative process like writing, sculpting, drawing, painting, dance and movement, textiles, clay, sand and mother earths materials from nature to facilitate the exploration of feelings, improve self-awareness and reduce anxiety for clients.
Using a variety of creative processes can be a way for clients to explore and express feelings that may be hard to put into words and to find new pathways to healing.
As an Art Therapist, I utilise creative processes, to help people explore and express unconscious material that is often difficult to articulate in words.
These methods are innovative, participatory and practical: they provide a supportive space for clients to ‘try on’ and practise new behaviours', and this can be more effective than merely talking about change.
Creativity harnesses the imagination and a sense of play. This can help those who have limited choices in their life to use the safe space of the therapeutic environment and want to:
Learn to understand to tolerate the uncertainty of the unknown,
Become more comfortable to be able to improvise
Open up to new possibilities in their lives.
Evidence-Based Support for Wellbeing
The Allied Health profession has been well established and recognised in many countries such as the UK, the USA and Europe since the 1940’s.
The Creative Art’s aligns well with indigenous and non-indigenous models of health and well-being.
International literature supporting Arts Therapy as a beneficial approach for people experiencing mental illness has strengthened in recent years, most notably with the publication of the World Health Organisations Scoping Review that synthesizes the global evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and well-being.
It was during my time in recovery that I dusted off my paints and brushes and started to heal through art making.
I had no verbal dialogue to express the medical trauma I had endured and the loss of wanting another baby, due to a full hysterectomy. I felt the call to engage in an Art Therapy session, and it was during this moment, of my health crisis, that Art Therapy sessions, helped me process this trauma, creatively, when I had no words. Due to this profound healing experiencing, I now work as a clinical Art Therapist either in person, or via Zoom, in one-on-one and group sessions.
I work with:
Grief & loss
Neurodiversity
Aged Care
Cancer
Medical Trauma
Chronic Health Issues
Clinical Menopause
IVF
Self-Confidence
Bullying
Creatives who are stuck
Life Transitions
